Mark: Follow Quickly

This is the one Gospel writer that seems to be in a hurry.  Not only did he write the shortest Gospel account, he spoke of moving along quickly 41 times.  He just got to the point.  Mark portrayed Jesus as servant and we can learn many valuable lessons from Mark's quick call to follow Jesus.

Follow Quickly

Mark 1:1-8

The Gospel of Mark moves along quickly. If you pause for a moment and take some consideration, you could easily be left behind. Following Jesus is not a philosophical quest, or even academic. Following Jesus is relational and is made of simple and spontaneous acts of obedience. With the virus all around us and a future as uncertain as ever, let’s not waste time and let’s all instead follow quickly.

Gifts From Jesus

Mark 2:1-3:12

Jesus did not come to receive- but rather to give. In today’s lengthily passage in Mark, we will learn to look beyond the excitement of miracles and see the life changing gifts of Jesus. Through faith in Jesus we can live lives of total fineness, fulfillment and freedom! That is just what we all need. As we remain committed to follow Jesus, let’s remain equally committed to live the wonderful lives that he has gifted us with.

Types Of People

Mark 3

As soon as we stick our head above the crowd, there will be people reacting. It is actually kind of funny from a distance, but not so much when we find ourselves in the middle. Few things are defined as following Jesus than the discipline of disciple making. We may want to stay at the surface of Christianity with all its excitement, or join the chorus of criticism, but to be a discipler of disciples is what following Jesus has always been about.

Christ-Centered Living

Mark 4:35-41

Our series through Mark is specifically looking at critical traits for following Jesus.  These traits include the need to follow, and to follow without pause. In addition, following Jesus requires forgiveness and the full commitment to conversion and discipleship. Todays trait is indispensable trait of Christ Centered Living. We will see clearly what it is and even more clearly how to do it.

Lose Your Lunch

Mark 6:30-34

Our series through Mark is highlighting critical traits for following Jesus.  These traits include our need to follow Jesus without pause, receive his forgiveness, our full commitment to conversion and discipleship and the need for us to live Christ-centered. Todays trait is in our giving whatever we have to Jesus for him to use as he pleases. By way of Jesus’ feeding the five thousand, I want us to be challenged to give all that we have to Jesus to be used for his service.

Pleasing Faith

Mark 7:25-28

In this unusual exchange between Jesus and a woman he refers to as a dog, we learn an exceptional lesson on faith. She was never offended and yet she kept up extremely well with the conversation. It is even considered a bit playful. Charles Spurgeon said of this story that “Our Lord had a very quick eye for spying faith…”, and we can learn a whole lot from it.

Expectations

Mark 9:42-50

Following Jesus, are we? Jesus unfolds a bit of responsibility, demands or expectations that accompanies the following. One writer referred to these statements as terrifying. I’m not sure the expectations are terrifying, but rather the examples sure are. Most of us claim to follow Jesus, but could it be that a certain number of us fail to meet these three expectations? Consequences are serious…. So let’s take a look.

Eyes Wide Open

Mark 10:1-16

This morning we’ll consider a fun challenge that we could all accept. Keep our eyes open! We have opportunities to care for people all around us, just like Jesus.  The tricky part is that the opportunities are often completely unrelated and at different levels of engagement. And we can switch between them in an instant if only we remain aware. Let’s take a look at this commonly told story of Jesus and all become more aware of the needs of such varying people around us.

The Kings...

Mark 11:1-11

This Sunday has huge significance. Today is the start of Passion Week, it is the day we commemorate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus and is the start of the final week of Lent. Every form of Christianity will recognize this day in a vast number of creative ways. With our crosses draped in purple, and all eyes on the kingly triumphal entry of Jesus, let’s all raise our hands in worship to the King.

Love, The Start of It All

Mark 12:39-41

There are many programs, gimmicks and strategies to build our self worth. Where could a person possibly find worth when they have intentionally fallen into the hopelessness of sin? Well, tucked away in the brilliant teachings of Jesus is the path to real self-esteem. Let’s think through the simple process as building blocks as we discover God’s strategy of raising our view of ourselves and see how it affects those around us.

An Awkward Gift

Mark 12:39-41
